A selective permanent residency pathway for high-calibre investors, founders and innovation-led capital leaders.
The Queensland National Innovation Visa pathway is not a traditional investor visa where capital alone is enough.
It is designed for exceptional, globally recognised individuals who can contribute to Australia’s future prosperity through innovation, investment, commercial growth and national-interest outcomes. The National Innovation Visa subclass 858 is a permanent, invitation-only visa for high-calibre talent, including global researchers, entrepreneurs, innovative investors, athletes and creatives.
For innovative investors, Queensland is looking for active involvement, a proven record of supporting successful innovative ventures, and the capacity to deploy at least AUD 5 million into Queensland’s innovation ecosystem for two or more years.
Enquire NowIs the Queensland National Innovation Visa Right for You?
This pathway may be suitable if you are an innovative investor, venture capital investor, founder, angel investor, family-office operator or business leader with a strong track record in high-growth ventures.
You may be a stronger fit if you can show:
Queensland’s published guidance specifically refers to innovative investors who have an established track record and are ready to invest a minimum of AUD 5 million for two or more years in the state’s innovation ecosystem.
This Is Not a Passive Investment Visa
Many investors still think of Australia’s investor migration pathways in the old Business Innovation and Investment Program style.
That is not how this pathway works.
The Queensland innovative investor pathway under subclass 858 is not built for passive property investors, traditional business owners with no innovation exposure, or applicants whose only strength is financial capacity.
Capital matters, but it must be connected to:
A cash-rich profile without evidence of innovation impact is usually not enough.

Why Queensland?
Queensland is positioning itself as a major destination for innovation, research, investment and high-growth commercial activity.
The state highlights internationally ranked universities, research hubs, Asia-Pacific connectivity, supportive government initiatives and major long-term opportunities linked to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
For the right investor, Queensland can offer more than lifestyle. It can offer access to a growing innovation ecosystem where capital, research, industry and government priorities intersect.
What Queensland Looks for in Innovative Investors
Queensland’s investor pathway focuses on applicants who can demonstrate both financial capacity and innovation credibility.
A strong candidate should be able to show:
Priority Sectors for Stronger Alignment
Candidates connected to Tier One or Tier Two sectors are highly regarded in the innovative investor pathway. Queensland’s guidance refers to documented investments linked to high-growth sectors, especially Tier One or Tier Two sectors.
Relevant sectors include:
Tier One Sectors
Tier Two Sectors
Recent Home Affairs invitation data for January to March 2026 showed 1,815 EOIs received and 146 invitations issued, with most invitations going to Priority 3 candidates in Tier One sectors.
Queensland Nomination Process
The process is selective and evidence-driven.
Step 1: Review Eligibility
Before registering interest, applicants should review the Home Affairs visa criteria and Queensland Government guidelines.
Step 2: Submit Registration of Interest
A Queensland ROI is not a visa application. It is a request to be considered for Queensland Government nomination.
Step 3: Shortlisting
Only a limited number of high-calibre candidates may be contacted to provide evidence.
Step 4: Interview and Nomination
Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview with the Trade and Investment Commissioner aligned to their passport country.
Step 5: Form 1000 and Home Affairs EOI
If nominated, candidates receive a signed Form 1000 from the Queensland Government, which can be attached to the Home Affairs EOI.
Step 6: Invitation to Apply
If the EOI is successful, Home Affairs may invite the applicant to apply for the National Innovation Visa.
Submitting an EOI does not guarantee an invitation, and an invitation does not guarantee visa grant. Home Affairs confirms that the EOI is not a visa application and not an assessment of visa eligibility.
Who May Not Be a Strong Fit?
This pathway may not be suitable if your profile is mainly based on:
If the profile is weak, it is better to identify that early rather than build a case around unrealistic expectations.

No. It should not be treated as a passive investment visa. Queensland’s investor pathway focuses on active, innovation-led investors with a proven track record of supporting successful innovative ventures.
Queensland’s guidance refers to a minimum of AUD 5 million, to be deployed upon visa grant for at least two or more years in Queensland’s innovation ecosystem.
No. Queensland nomination can support your EOI, but Home Affairs decides whether to invite and grant the visa. Home Affairs confirms that submitting an EOI does not guarantee invitation or visa grant.
Stronger candidates are usually venture capital investors, angel investors, family-office operators, founders, private equity investors or business leaders with documented innovation investment activity and measurable outcomes.
Important evidence may include investment records, exits, IPOs, acquisitions, funding rounds, board roles, leadership involvement, investment deployment plans and third-party endorsements from recognised innovation or investment partners.
Property investment alone is generally not aligned with this pathway. The focus is on innovation-led capital deployment, not passive wealth or conventional asset holding.
The National Innovation Visa framework does consider age. Applicants aged 55 or above may need to demonstrate exceptional benefit to the Australian community, depending on the case.
