HOW TO BECOME A REGISTERED NURSE IN AUSTRALIA?

To become a certified registered nurse, you must meet the criteria set out by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and be registered with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA).

AHPRA is an organisation that assesses international applications on the NMBA’s behalf and is responsible for implementation of the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme ((NRAS) across Australia.

You are required to demonstrate your eligibility for registration through two main components:
QUALIFICATION
criteria for qualification:
  • Successful completion of all the components of education in nursing
  • Qualification is equivalent to Bachelor degree in Australia and must include at least 800 hours of workplace experience in different health care settings
  • Regular analysis of work and recognition by an external nursing regulatory body, whose accreditation standards were equivalent to Australia’s
  • Professional knowledge and skills should be in coherence with present healthcare knowledge, nursing research and health policy
  • Certification from educational institute that proves of completing an assessment in medication administration and management.
REGISTRATION STANDARDS
criteria for registration standards:
  • An overall score of 7 or at least 7 in each component of IELTS (International English Language Testing System) OR
  • An overall score of 58 in PTE (Pearson Test of English) Academic OR
  • An overall score of 88 in TOEFL (iBT) (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
  • Demonstrate NMBA that the professionals skills and knowledge are up-to-date by meeting the recency of practice registration standard
  • Have criminal history checked on the basis of different factors like nature of offence (if committed any), pending charges or sentence served, etc.
